Self care is something that is not talked about enough. There are many different ways to treat yourself, whether it’s a spa day or just a good meal. Taking time out of your busy schedule is important to help maintain good mental and physical health year round.
Mental health is so important. Constantly being busy will wear out the brain and you’ll feel like you’ve hit a wall. I used to feel so overwhelmed all the time, and I was negative and down on myself constantly. However, now I’ve found ways to stay positive even while busy.
On days I feel overwhelmed, I take a deep breath, do something that makes me happy and just take a little break from the world.
It’s normal to be busy, but as long as you take care of yourself you’ll maintain a balance that feels right for you.
Tips to maintain good self care:
Reading a book
On a busy day, finding time to take a second for yourself is important. Reading a book is the perfect way. You find yourself getting lost in the story, and taking your mind off of reality for a little while. A good book I’ve read is called One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus. I won’t spoil too much but it is a murder mystery about a group of friends in highschool, and it will leave you on the edge of your seat.
Limit screen time
I know most of the world is all virtual these days, but putting technology down for some time will help improve your happiness and mind. While putting the screen down, picking up a good book is a great way to distract yourself from the screen in front of you. I find this the most challenging. With social media, I never find myself getting bored but I know for my happiness, it is best to put the phone down. Staring at a screen all day definitely should not be a priority when trying to maintain self health.
Going something that makes you happy
Everyone has different ways to keep themselves happy and calm. By doing that, you can see results in your mental health. Whether it is taking a nice shower or taking a nap, putting time aside for you will help in the long run. One way I stay happy is taking a nap or calling a loved one on the phone. Taking a nap allows me to decompress and get re-energized. Calling a loved one automatically puts me in a better mood. It helps me get all of my negative feelings off of my chest as well. Hearing my grandma’s positive words helps me realize that life is too short to be stressing as much as I am.
Skin care
Skin care is so important. Having a skin care routine does not have to be 20 steps long, and the simple routines seem to be the most effective. Taking out those 10 minutes each day will help improve your skin and your brain. You will see results with glowing skin and a peaceful mind. I love skin care. It is one of my favorite things to do. Sometimes I pretend like I am making a video and explain the products I use and the order of which I use them. It sounds silly but it makes for a fun task that is stress free.
Going outside
The outdoors are an amazing place. On a nice day, I love to sit outside or go on a hike. I feel it puts me in a better mood. Sitting outside for 10 minutes a day will automatically help you feel relaxed. On super busy days, if you’re able to, doing your work outside will also help you stay calm and gain some much needed vitamin D. On an amazing day, I sit in my backyard and watch the birds fly though the sky. It reminds me of how awesome nature is and it gives an automatic serotonin boost.
Journaling
Journaling is a great way to get your mind off of whatever is going on around you and focus on yourself. Expressing feelings is like lifting a huge burden off of your shoulders. I will be honest, I do not journal much, but when I do I always feel so much better after I do.
I hope this small list was helpful but whether or not this helps, always try to find something that will bring you joy.
